Ten CDs From Under the Radar

In the record business, sales are down Rosetta Stone, but in my business, reviewing records, the action never slackens. Here are ten morereasons, from under the radar and way out there, why this was agreat year to be a music critic. The Speaking Canaries, Get Out Alive: TheLast Type Story (Scat)When he is not drumming with instrumental terrorists DonCaballero, Damon Che is the monster guitarist and vocal prow ofthis power trio. He should let the Canaries out more often GetOut Alive is the groups first album since 1995s searingSongs for the Terrestially Challenged. But for yourpatience, you get napalm riffing and glass-spear harmonics thattell you exactly what Husker Du would have sounded like with EddieVan Halen and J Mascis on four-handed guitar. For true amp-deathaesthetes, there is a second, limited CD-R edition of Get OutAlive with ferociously Rosetta Stone V3 extended versions of these songs. The Fall Words of Expectation: The BBCSessions (Sanctuary)In a quarter-century of non-stop insurrection, barking poet MarkE. Smith and his many, merry-go-round lineups of the Fall haverecorded nearly two dozen sessions for John Peels BBC Radio Show-- reportedly more than any other band. This two-CD set featuresthe Falls first five visits to the Beeb, between 1978 and 1981, infull: a valuable document of the groups early rattling sound andSmiths explosive lyric and vocal wrath. Two more sessions from the1990s reveal a more musically polished band led by a lethal, unchanged Smith. The leap from his opening harangue in June, 1978,"Rebellious Jukebox," to the 96 cover of Captain Beefhearts"Beatle Bones N Smokin Stones" affirms Peels famous lovingdescription of the Fall: "always different Rosetta Stone Portuguese, always the same."Augie March Strange Bird (BMGAustralia)The first of two, new Australian wonders: Augie March are aquintet from Melbourne of jubilant, accessible invention, wrappingthe enigmatic songcraft of singer-guitarist Glenn Richards inluxuriant melees of chiming guitars, mountain-stream voices andkeyboard grandeur. There are fleeting airs of beguiling precedence-- Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks leading the Flaming Lips insteadof Wayne Coyne the Beatles "White Album" as performed by SuperFurry Animals. But on Strange Bird, Augie Marchs secondalbum, the blend and glow are all their own.Gelbison 1704 (Virgin RecordsAustralia)Also from the far side of the Pacific: 1704, the debutalbum by Sydneys Gelbison, was produced by Ian Ball of the Britishband Gomez, a synchronous pairing Cheap Rosetta Stone V3 since both groups subscribe tosimilarly expansive notions of psychedelia.
